FENTON FERGUSON’S LATE RESPONSE AND SILENCE – PEARNEL CHARLES
January 18, 2016
Opposition Spokesperson for Social Security, Pearnel Charles today expressed shock at the very late response of Government to a family of six that lost everything to a fire in the constituency of St. Thomas Eastern.
Mr. Charles noted that fire destroyed the home of a St. Thomas family in the community of Prospect early December 2015, leaving them to have to fend for themselves. “It was only after the intervention of the media and JLP Caretaker Mr. Delano Seiveright a few days ago that the Government representatives showed up to assess the damage and arrange further assistance.” – said Mr. Charles, who is a former Minister of Labour and Social Security.
Mr. Charles also noted the relative silence of the Government to the damning activity-based audit report by the Auditor General of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), pointing to flagrant and costly bad governance.
Mr. Charles said that the Government needs to take immediate action to address any irregular or improper activities identified within the report.
