Ministry moves to clear case backlog

The Ministry of Justice will be accelerating planned strategies to reduce the case pile up in the criminal division of the Supreme Court, a statement issued Tuesday read.

Cabinet, at its recent sitting, gave approval to several wide-ranging proposals to clear the growing list of cases, including the provision of additional courtrooms and the appointment of additional court staff.

Bartlett Cites Crime as Major Problem for Tourist Industry

Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett has said that crime is having an adverse effect on the nation's tourist industry.

"Crime, in my mind is the single most debilitating factor, the one area that is worrying to me beyond anything else, and I must tell you that the fuel crisis is not as worrying to me as crime. The turmoil in the aviation industry is not as worrying to me as crime," the Minister said.

Scrap Metal Exports Suspended

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Karl Samuda, has signed a Ministerial Order prohibiting the export of scrap metal until further notice.

The Minister, in a statement to the House of Representatives yesterday (June 10), said that this action had become necessary as a result of "illegal activities that now pose a major threat to the economic development of the country and the disruption of essential services."

CF to Get Motor Vehicles

Cabinet has approved the award of a $65.1 million contract to Toyota Jamaica Limited for the purchase of motor vehicles for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

The vehicles to be supplied include 34 double cab pick-ups and five, three-tonne troupe-carrying trucks.
