Politics Has Contributed to Crime Problem - PM

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has said there could be no denying that politics has contributed to the crime problem that faces the country. Mr. Golding, who was addressing the issue of political transformation at the third biennial Jamaican Diaspora Conference in Kingston on Monday (June 16), said political tribalism and some of the ugly manifestations of it, had contributed to the genesis of the criminal activity that we are experiencing in Jamaica.

The complement of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF), has been boosted with the addition of 119 new members, comprising 88 males and 31 females.

On July 4, the new members were presented with certificates at a Passing-Out Parade, held at the Carl Rattray Training College in Runaway Bay, St. Ann.

The Minister made the call on Thursday (July 3) while addressing the staff of the Tamarind Farm Adult Correctional Centre, following a tour of the facility and the rehabilitation activities being carried out by inmates.

Minister of National Security, Senator Colonel Trevor MacMillan, says that the new strategies implemented by the security forces to fight the upsurge in criminal activities are having a noticeable impact.

Senator MacMillan told JIS News that "the situation certainly has quietened down," while noting that there are still some problem areas, but that for the most part, crime in many areas that were "hot" has been contained.

Samuda Urges Sand Thieves to Come Forward

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Karl Samuda, has urged persons involved in the theft of sand from a property in Trelawny, or anyone who saw anything, to come forward.

Speaking at a press briefing, at the Ministry's New Kingston offices on July 17, Mr. Samuda lamented the defacing of the property which, he said, was to have been a "a massive tourist industry development in Trelawny."

INDUSTRY Minister Karl Samuda yesterday vowed that his administration would expose the culprits responsible for the theft of an estimated 500 truckloads of white sand from a 64-acre property near Duncans, Trewlany.

An incensed Samuda urged the perpetrators to come clean now, as they would eventually be caught and punished.
