$2 Million Fine Proposed for Scrap Metal Thieves

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Karl Samuda, has proposed that persons found in possession of, or attempting to export stolen scrap metal, be fined $2 million, up from the current $3,000.

"This Ministry will be recommending to the Cabinet that they approve and increase the fine to $2 million for anyone found in possession of stolen goods or attempting to export stolen goods," the Minister said.

The Government has received approximately $1.5 million from its Canadian counterpart as part of the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) between both countries, which facilitates co-operation in the fight against criminal activities.

The funds are part proceeds from the forfeited account of an incarcerated Canadian drug dealer, who was involved in the trafficking of narcotics from Jamaica to Canada.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has said for the country to effectively tackle the monster of crime, the preparation has to start from the training of the persons who will be integrally involved in the process.

Golding was speaking at a ceremony where 50 police personnel graduated from a special management development programme at the Twickenham Park Police Academy.

$470 Million Upgrade for JCF Staff College

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has disclosed that $400 Million has been earmarked for the upgrading of the Jamaica Constabulary Staff College at Twickenham Park in St. Catherine. A further $70 Million will be spent to improve the shooting range at the college.

The Ministry of National Security will be setting up Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance systems across the island to monitor public spaces, as part of its strategy to tackle crime.

Minister of State in the Ministry, Senator Arthur Williams, during his presentation in the State of the Nation Debate in the Upper House on July 25, said that CCTV systems are being developed in Montego Bay, May Pen and Mandeville.
