With police figures for carnal abuse and rape growing by nightmarish proportions yearly, the Jamaican Government is getting ready to heed a 2001 call by member of parliament for St Catherine South Central Sharon Hay-Webster for a registry of sex offenders and for victims and their communities to be notified when such persons are released from prison, the Sunday Observer has learnt.

Senate passes anti-doping law

ALMOST TWO weeks before the start of the 29th Olympiad in Beijing, China, the Senate has passed anti-doping legislation.

This forms part of Government's efforts to combat the illicit use of drugs in sport.

The Anti-Doping in Sport Act, 2008, received unanimous support from the Senate yesterday, days after the House of Representatives gave the bill the green light.

Legal Framework in Place for Testing Athletes

Jamaica now has a legal framework in place to test its athletes for banned substances, following the passage of the Anti-Doping In Sport Act 2008, in the Senate on July 25.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Senator Dorothy Lightbourne, who piloted the Bill in the Upper House, said the Bill was timely, as "Jamaica gets ready to compete this year at the Olympics in Beijing, China."

Jamaica gets part proceeds of convicted drug dealer's funds under MLAT

The Government has received approximately $1.5 million from its Canadian counterpart as part of the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) between both countries, which facilitates co-operation in the fight against criminal activities.

The funds are part proceeds from the forfeited account of an incarcerated Canadian drug dealer, who was involved in the trafficking of narcotics from Jamaica to Canada.

The Prime Minister Bruce Golding has given instructions for constitutional motions to be filed against PNP’s MPs with dual citizenship.

Mr Golding made the announcement this morning during nomination day activities in North East St Catherine.

Mr Golding says he is standing by the principle of the Constitution that people with dual citizenship cannot sit in the houses of parliament.

Mair nominated

Gregory Mair has been nominated as the Jamaica Labour party’s (JLP) candidate for North East St Catherine.

He will be contesting the elections against the People’s National Party’s (PNP) Granville Valentine who will be nominated at 12.30 p.m.

Mr Mair’s campaign manager, Warren Newby, says he expects the JLP candidate to be re-elected with an increased majority.

But Mr Valentine is not daunted.

Youth to the rescue - 100 students trained in emergency response

Prime Minister Bruce Golding's vision of creating an islandwide network of young people to assist in emergencies began taking shape with the graduation of the first batch of cadets involved in the Preparedness and Emergency Respond Corps (PERC).

The 100 cadets, trained in aspects of emergency response, were presented during a ceremony at St Mary High School in the parish yesterday.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding will be the guest speaker at the Advertising Agencies Association of Jamaica (AAAJ) Annual Media Awards Ceremony and Luncheon, to be held next Wednesday at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston.

MONTEGO BAY, St James - Prime Minister Bruce Golding was among the more than 200 volunteers who planted fruit and food trees on the 1,200-acre Blue Hole Nature Park, St James, during Labour Day activities on Monday.

The Blue Hole Nature Park project was one of the six national Labour Day projects across the island.

But, Prime Minister Bruce Golding promised that come next year, there will be a national project in every parish.
