Government targets NIS delinquents

The Government is warning that it will be targeting employers who are withholding salary deductions intended for the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).
The state minister in the labour and social security ministry, Andrew Gallimore has announced that his ministry will be proposing that the fines be increased.
At the same time, Mr Gallimore said the Government will be taking employers withholding the deductions to court.
Jamaica tourism not affected by H1N1 rise

The tourism minister Edmund Bartlett said the local spread of the Influenza A, H1N1 virus has not affected tourist arrivals in Jamaica.
According to the tourism minister, foreigners continue to travel to Jamaica, as the World Health Organization has not imposed any travel restrictions.
Mr Bartlett said he does not foresee any problems because the local health authorities are able to deal with the situation.
Montague urges citizens to get involved in local gov't reform

Robert Montague, the point man on local government reform, has called on citizens to get involved in the process to ensure that it works in their interest.
"In this local government reform process, we are building capacity at the councils, so that when you call them and make a report, the parish council is in a position, if not to respond fully to your needs, to at least acknowledge that you have a concern," said Montague, state minister in the Office of the Prime Minister.
Shaw: Gov't nowhere near to signing IMF letter of intent

FINANCE Minister Audley Shaw says Government is "nowhere near the point of issuing a letter of intent yet" to resume a borrowing relationship with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He was responding to queries from the Opposition's Central Kingston member of parliament Ronald Thwaites regarding the status of Jamaica's relationship with the IMF, whether a letter of intent had been issued and whether the terms would be presented to the House before further discussions.

IFC Will Not Operate as a Tax Haven, Says Minister Shaw

Minister of Finance, Audley Shaw, has assured Parliament that Jamaica will not earn the reputation of a tax haven, when the proposed International Financial Centre (IFC) is established in downtown Kingston.
Addressing the House of Representatives today (June 30), Mr. Shaw argued that a tax haven is a jurisdiction that does not have competitive tax base, and refuses to provide information to foreign tax authorities.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Senator Aundre Franklin, is traveling to Mexico this week to participate in a high level meeting on 'Learned Lessons from Influenza A (H1N1)'.
The invitation was extended by the government of Mexico, in an effort to share information about the country's experience with handling the outbreak of the Influenza A(H1N1) virus, which was first detected there.

Some level of normality was restored at the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) last night following a meeting chaired by Labour Minister Pearnel Charles between representatives of the power company's management and unionised workers.

MINISTER of State with responsibility for local government reform Robert Montague on Friday signed a $3-million agreement with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in an effort to reproduce some of Jamaica's local government best practices across the region.
