'Stop meddling' - Montague warns Portmore councillors to stay out of enforcement matters

Minister with responsibility for local government, Robert Montague, is demanding that councillors at the Portmore Municipal Council cease influencing enforcement officers as they carry out their duties.
Montague handed down the directive after complaints from Chief Administrative Officer David Parkes, who declared that councillors had not been allowing the officers to work independently.

The vastness of Jamaica's small-scale farm landscape will have a negative impact on the island's food security unless those resources are channelled into more viable cooperative initiatives, the agriculture minister has warned.
Speaking at a conference on food-security and agricultural development in the Americas on Tuesday, Dr Christopher Tufton argued that the 220,000 small farmers, who represent 76 per cent of Jamaica's agriculturists, posed environmental challenges.

The establishment of an ophthalmology centre at St Joseph's Hospital will significantly improve eye care islandwide and regionally, Jamaica's health minister has said.
Rudyard Spencer said an agreement signed this week was part of Jamaica's ongoing cooperation with Cuba and will continue to facilitate access to eye-care services regardless of income.

FORMER MEMBER of Parliament for North West Clarendon, Michael Stern, says he will continue to work on the ground in an unofficial capacity despite a court ruling Monday forcing him to vacate the constituency seat.
Speaking with The Gleaner on Wednesday, Stern said he had been interacting with the people of North West Clarendon for more than 14 years before entering representational politics and would not turn his back on constituents.
Jagdeo arrives today for five-day visit

PRESIDENT of the Republic of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, is expected to arrive in Jamaica today for a five-day working visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
The Guyanese president will be accompanied by his presidential advisor on community development, Odinga Lumumba.
President Jagdeo will today tour the JB Ethanol Plant at Port Esquivel, St Catherine, and later in the evening attend the Emancipation Jubilee at Seville in St Ann.

Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, will pay a one-day visit to Jamaica to take part in the Independence celebrations on Thursday, August 6. He will attend the Independence Grand Gala at the National Stadium on Independence Day and prior to that, will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Bruce Golding and other government officials.
Discussions will include the new initiatives relating to Jamaica's energy supply and the impact of the global economic crisis, among other matters.
SERHA Honours 125 Health Employees

Retired and current employees of the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA), who have contributed significantly to the advancement of health care in the region, were honoured at the Hilton Kingston Hotel on Thursday (July 30).
Of the 125 persons honoured at the function, 97 have retired as of 2008, while 28 are existing staff members.

The Ministry of Health held a high level meeting on Wednesday (July 29) to start discussions, with key stakeholders, on the establishment of a Centre for Health Workforce Planning and Research.
The meeting, at the Courtleigh Hotel, New Kingston, was held in collaboration with the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) and Dalhousie University in Canada. It is one of several steps being taken toward the development of the Centre, expected to be operational by next February.
