Health Minister orders audit of sessions and oncall payments

The health minister Rudyard Spencer has ordered an immediate audit and investigation into the approval process for session and on call payments for medical groups in the public health sector.
At a meeting with representatives of various medical groups on Friday, Mr. Spencer informed them of possible irregularities related to the approval of the payments.
The health minister was careful to point out that the investigation will not be targeting any specific group of workers.

The 17-year-old institution, Hydel Group of Schools, has added a tertiary arm to its educational offerings.
In a ceremony held at the school's headquarters at Ferry, St Catherine, Sunday afternoon, Education Minister Andrew Holness officially declared the Hydel University open.
Founder and president, Senator Hyacinth Bennett, while welcoming the school's first set of students who officially began classes yesterday, admitted the institution has endured its own share of challenges.

Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer, has ordered that an audit be done and an investigation be undertaken, immediately, into the approval process for session and on call payments for medical groups in the public health sector.
The Minister met with representatives of the medical groups on Friday (August 28), and informed them that there may be some irregularities, as it relates to the approval of the payments, and so the Ministry will be conducting a probe.

Education Ministry Increases Number of Literacy and Numeracy Coaches

The Ministry of Education has moved to strengthen its thrust to achieve 100 per cent literacy by 2015, by increasing the number of Literacy and Numeracy Coaches available to schools.
This year, the Ministry has a total of 80 Literacy Coaches, which is up from 50, and 70 Numeracy Coaches, up from 45.

Minister of Finance and the Public Service, the Hon. Audley Shaw, on Monday (August 31) confirmed that Jamaica received an allocation of 74% of its quota of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) last Friday.

Registration for the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) Health Card begins today (September 1), at all public hospitals and health centres across the island.
The card is another of the Government's thrust to ensure easier access to health care and drugs, since the abolition of user fees in public sector health facilities last year.
Government to explore LNG

The government is moving a step closer in the exploration for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) as part of its efforts to cut the country’s energy bill.
State minister in the Energy Ministry Laurence Broderick said negotiations with investors are far advanced.
He said the government’s thrust towards renewal energy would help to reduce the cost of public electricity and help manufactures to produce at a more cost effective rate.
