No reduction in School Garden Programme allocation

Agriculture Minister Dr Christopher Tufton has intervened in a bid to reverse the reduction in the allocation of funds to the National School Garden Programme announced last week.

This reduction was announced against the background of the 20 per cent cut in capital expenditure mandated by Prime Minister Bruce Golding for all government ministries.

DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Dr Kenneth Baugh has called for urgent and effective global action on climate change to avoid the catastrophic consequences of global warming.

Baugh, who made the call on the weekend at the United Nations General Assembly, pointed out that Jamaica was heavily impacted by natural disasters which are set to increase in numbers and severity as a result of the warming of earth's surface.

MINISTER of Industry, Investment and Commerce Karl Samuda has given the Scrap Metal Association one month to use all appropriate measures to determine whether any of its members are engaged in the illegal activity of purchasing stolen metal for export.

In addition, the minister is to set up mechanisms to monitor locations engaged in the packaging of scrap metals for export.

Government will apply changes to public sector fees and taxes next fiscal year. This was announced by Prime Minister, Hon. Bruce Golding, during an early morning sitting of the House on September 30, following the acceptance of the Supplementary Estimates by the Standing Finance Committee.

"We intend, in the next fiscal year, to roll out the full programme of tax reform on which so much work has been done, but requires decision and implementation," the Prime Minister said.
