The Practical Nurses' Association has shown discontent over a statement made by Labour Minister Pearnel Charles in response to a protest by the group over what it claimed was the unreasonable selection of workers for employment in Canada.

Charles, at a meeting recently, made it clear that they weren't qualified for the overseas programme as the Canadian curriculum was different from what they had learnt in Jamaica.

Jamaica has been praised internationally for its manage-ment of the Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak, according to Rudyard Spencer, minister of health.

Spencer's revelation came at the 63rd annual educational conference of the Association of Public Health Inspectors held at the Iberostar Rose Hall Hotel on Tuesday.

THE Government says it will be reviewing the viability of its postal outlets without the need to reduce services to rural residents.

This assurance was given by minister with responsibility for information, telecommunications and special projects in the Office of the Prime Minister, Daryl Vaz, after visiting the Moneague Post Office and the Rio Hoe Postal Agency in St Ann recently.

Government has abandoned its plans to extend the runway at the Ken Jones domestic airport in Portland.

According to Daryl Vaz, minister of information, the investment is not considered to be rewarding at this time.

The minister, who was addressing the business community in Portland on Thursday, said an assessment done earlier concluded that the runway at Ken Jones could only be extended by a further 400 feet, which was not sufficient to warrant serious investment.

Audley Shaw, minister of finance and the public service, has weighed in on comments made by Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Les Green that some police officers have died as a result of their shady and corrupt dealings.

Green came in for criticism from the Police Federation, which asked that he prove his allegation or resign. Police Commissioner Hardley Lewin has placed a gag order on the parties involved.

IMF team in Jamaica

A team from the International Monetary Fund
(IMF) is currently in the island having discussion with the Government on an application for a standby agreement with the fund.

Audley Shaw, minister of finance and the public service, made the disclosure of the team's presence in the country yesterday at the launch of the Jamaica Employers' Federation (JEF) 2009-10 Salary Survey at the JEF's Ruthven Road office in St Andrew.

Golding pledges $100,000 to each burned-out vendor

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has pledged to provide cash assistance of $100,000 to each of the vendors whose goods were destroyed in the fire at the Oxford Mall arcade in Kingston earlier this week.
