The Government has been doing a lot of work to ensure protection of the rights of persons living with HIV/AIDS, the Minister of Health, Hon Rudyard Spencer, said in his World AIDS Day Message issued Monday.

Mr. Spencer noted that the Cabinet approved the National HIV/AIDS Workplace Policy in 2008, with recommendations for changes.

Broderick Praises Safety System in Mining Sector

Minister of State in the Ministry of Energy and Mining, Hon. Laurence Broderick, has lauded the safety record of the local mining industry.

Speaking at the National Minerals Industry Safety Awards banquet, recently at the Courtleigh Hotel and Suites in Kingston, Mr. Broderick pinpointed the work ethnic in the sector in terms of discipline and safety.

He said that, visiting bauxite plants, he observed the respect that the heads of the companies had for security and safety.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has assured persons living with HIV/AIDS that the National HIV/AIDS Workplace Policy is expected o be debated in Parliament during the 2009/10 session, which ends next March.

Housing solutions for 40 needy persons in South Eastern St. Mary have been provided through Food for the Poor, in partnership with Member of Parliament for the constituency, Mr. Tarn Peralto.

The two bedroom units were handed over to the recipients during a presentation function, held at the Cape Clear Training Centre in St. Mary, on Thursday, November 26.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Olivia Grange, has said it is time to accelerate the development of the sport of gymnastics in Jamaica.

Minister Grange was speaking before she officially opened the Jamaica Gymnastics Association's International Development meet on Saturday (Nov. 28) at the Ishimoto School of Gymnastics in Kingston.

Gymnastics is being taught in 20 primary schools and there are 200 active gymnasts across the island.
