PM Predicts Modest Growth in 2010

Prime Minister Bruce Golding says that the economy is expected to return to a path of modest growth by the middle of the year, and that this represents a new beginning which must be accelerated.
In his New Year's Message, the Prime Minister highlighted tourism and agriculture as two sectors that grew during the past year, and restated the Government's resolve to make enterprises in these and other sectors succeed.

New Energy Policy Tabled in Parliament

A new energy policy document, based on national consultations and comments from a wide cross-section of society as well as current realities facing Jamaica, has been tabled in Parliament by Minister of Mining and Energy, the Hon Jams Robertson.
According to the Minister the document represents a revision of the Energy Policy Green Paper 2006-2020, which had been tabled by the previous Government in 2006 but was never debated. The new document was tabled on Tuesday, December 22.

Come next year, the government-owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) will be placing increased focus on improving its operations, including strengthening its fleet, as it strives to provide a safe, modern, and reliable bus system for the travelling public.
Bus, Taxi Fares Increase January 16

In keeping with the recent recommendations of the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR), bus and taxi fares are to be increased by 20 per cent, effective Saturday, January 16, 2010.
Transport and Works Minister, the Hon Mike Henry, in advising of the pending new transportation rate, said that the bus and taxi operators had convinced the OUR of the need for a fare adjustment, which the Government also accepted.
Classes delayed at several schools

The Education Minister, Andrew Holness has indicated that several schools will not reopen for the start of the new academic term today.
He said a bulletin will be issued to parents regarding the re-opening schedule for the affected schools.
However, Mr. Holness has confirmed that the Lime Hall Primary School in St. Ann is among the schools that will not reopen today.
He said this is because necessary repairs at the school were not completed over the Christmas break.
