In an apparent about-face in the extradition fight over west Kingston enforcer Chris-topher 'Dudus' Coke, Justice Minister Dorothy Lightbourne said she had taken into account evidence besides the contentious wiretapping information in signing the request for proceedings to begin.

The Government has criticised the Opposition's objections to today's debate on the anti-crime bills as a "wanton display of hypocrisy and a deliberate intent to frustrate the will of the people" and initiatives to curb crime.
Andrew Holness, leader of government business in the House of Representatives, argued that the bills had been tabled in Parliament since September 9, 2008, and had been subjected to the extensive deliberations of a joint select committee.

SHAHINE Robinson of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) lost her parliamentary seat of North East St Ann in the Supreme Court today after her lawyers failed to appear.
The declaration that the seat is vacant means that the JLP currently has a 31-28 majority heading into this afternoon's no-confidence motion against the prime minister Bruce Golding brought by the Opposition People's National Party (PNP).

JUSTICE Minister Dorothy Lightbourne has said that fresh evidence did not cause her to authorise the start of extradition proceedings against Christopher 'Dudus' Coke following nine months of stalling.
Instead, the attorney general said, she did so out of a concern that the Government could be accused of breaching its obligation under the Extradition Treaty with the United States.

EDUCATION Minister Andrew Holness has given assurance that some of the schools closed in West Kingston can reopen as early as this week.
The schools were forced to close as a result of last week's three-day stand-off between the security forces and gunmen loyal to former Tivoli Gardens don Christopher 'Dudus’ Coke.
Anti-crime Bills debate could hit snag

THE Government has described as "a wanton display of hypocrisy", the Opposition's intent to not participate in today's debate on six anti-crime Bills in parliament.
In a statement last night, leader of Government Business Andrew Holness said the Opposition's call for more time was "unreasonable" as the Bills were tabled in parliament nearly two years ago and was subjected to extensive deliberations by a Joint Select Committee of Parliament.

The Ministry of Education is advising that schools in Kingston and St. Andrew will be open on Monday (May 31) with the exception of some institutions located in the West Kingston area.
According to a release from the Ministry, the Tivoli Gardens and Denham Town high schools, as well as all adjoining primary, all-age, junior high, infant and basic schools, will remain closed until further notice.

The North East St Ann constituency is now without a member of parliament (MP).
The seat won by Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate Shahine Robinson in the September 3, 2007 general election has been declared vacant by the Supreme Court. A by-election is expected to be held soon.
Robinson's seat was declared vacant because she failed to file relevant documents within a specified time, arising from the election petition filed against her, alleging dual citizenship.

The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) used its majority in Parliament to secure the position of Bruce Golding as prime minister despite the parliamentary Opposition mobilising all its members to remove him.
Following a marathon debate on a motion of no-confidence brought by the People's National Party (PNP) against Golding, Parliament voted along party lines.

The Ministry of Tourism and the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) will spearhead a promotional blitz in key North American and European tourist markets, in a bid to prevent a projected US$350 million loss in revenue, as a result of the recent activities in West Kingston.
The campaign, details of which were finalised over the past weekend during meetings and consultations with Ministry officials and sector stakeholders and interests, is projected to cost some US$10 million, and gets underway on June 4.

The Ministry of Health wishes to advise the public that the Kingston Public Hospital has resumed full services today (Wednesday, June 2, 2010). However, elective surgeries and clinics will operate from 8am - 4pm daily. The University Hospital of the West Indies has resumed elective surgeries and is expected to restore full services by Friday, June 4, 2010.
