Samuda robbed

Gunmen rampaged the St Catherine home of Commerce Minister Karl Samuda yesterday, holding a family member and workers hostage before stealing a firearm and cash.
A clearly shaken Samuda told The Gleaner that he felt violated, even as investigators combed his home and adjoining farm, located in the placid community of Knollis, along the Riversdale main road, for clues.
The minister said the incident took place about noon.

The Cabinet has approved changes to the legislation governing plea-bargaining that should sweep away concerns that conflicting laws might jeopardise criminals' ability to rat out cronies and spend less time behind bars.
"The amendments will allow a judge or resident magistrate to impose a sentence less than the mandatory minimum sentence that can be imposed under the law," Information Minister Daryl Vaz told journalists yesterday.

JUNCTION, St Elizabeth — He says it is still "a work in progress" but Prime Minister Bruce Golding has plans for drastic changes in the way motor vehicles are certified as regards their fitness for the road.
For one thing, he wants the process "privatised" and he wants a way to be developed so that the onus is consistently on motor vehicle operators to demonstrate the fitness of their vehicles – not just once per year.
