The heavy showers that occurred in Western Jamaica yesterday (August 29), has resulted in one death, the injury of three persons, and 17 motor vehicles being damaged in the Long Hill area of St. James.

Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Audley Shaw, has charged commercial banks to be the driving force behind the growth of the entrepreneurial sector.
Minister Shaw noted during a press conference at the Ministry in Kingston, on August 27, that small businesses want to invest, but the commercial banking sector "has to be the mainframe behind how we can get that investment going."

Prime Minister Bruce Golding said that Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Audley Shaw has assured him that the inflation rate for this fiscal year would finish lower than what was projected.
He was speaking at the launch of the Jamaica Infrastructure Development Programme (JIDP) in Lewisville, St. Elizabeth on August 31.

Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding, launched the St. Elizabeth leg of the Government's massive Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP), estimated to cost some $36 billion, at the Lewisville High School, in St. Elizabeth on Tuesday (August 31).
The full programme includes significant upgrading and repairs to roads and bridges across the island over the next five years. The St. Elizabeth leg will be done over six months at a cost of US$60 Million.
Cabinet moves to nullify Pratt and Morgan

The Cabinet has approved amendments to the proposed Charter of Rights to reverse the effects of the Privy Council's ruling in the Pratt and Morgan case.
Details of the changes have not yet been made public but they are designed to nullify the 1993 Privy Council ruling that held that persons could not be executed if they remained on death row for more than five years.
'We are not fighting the media'

The Government has moved to clear the air about its position on the local media in the wake of growing unease following recent comments by Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
On Sunday, Golding used a political platform to suggest that sections of the media, and in particular The Gleaner, were working with other groups in pushing a propaganda line while ignoring the facts about the Manatt, Phelps & Phillips affair.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding is slated to meet with several private-sector leaders this morning to provide answers to their questions on the Manatt, Phelps & Phillips affair.
Private-sector leaders had submitted six questions to Golding in the wake of a Sunday Gleaner exposé on the emails shared by Solicitor General Douglas Leys, local attorney Harold Brady and the American law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips.
