Just over $100 million is to be spent on constructing a fixed weigh scale station at Harbour View, St. Andrew, Transport and Works Minister, the Hon. Mike Henry, has announced.

The project, to be undertaken by Tankweld Construction Company Limited, forms part of the Ministry's Vehicle Weight Enforcement Programme, launched in December 2009, which is one of the strategies being pursued to strengthen and preserve the island's roadways against deterioration, particularly by overladen vehicles.

Speaking at the signing of the contracts at the Ministry on Friday (February 26), Mr. Henry noted that the roadway adjacent to Harbour View was one of the most "heavily trafficked" by overweight vehicles, hence the need for the weigh scale station in that area.

"We have moved now to implement the weigh scale enforcement, and next week we will sign the contract for the four lane bridge to be built," he said.

Chairman and Managing Director of Tankweld, Jerome Gayle, said that the project, which is slated to commence shortly, should be completed within six months. .

He gave an assurance that the company will achieve the six-month target, "providing, of course, we have the full cooperation from all stakeholders including, most importantly, the cooperation of the citizens in the surrounding communities."

The Vehicle Weight Enforcement Programme, an initiative of the Ministry, involves the establishment of fixed scales at strategic locations across the island. These include areas in Trelawny, St. Mary and St. Catherine, in addition to Harbour View.
