Ground Broken for $32 Million Road Project in St. Elizabeth

Ground was broken on Friday (Jan. 22) for the rehabilitation of the 3.2 kilometres Greenfield Road in St. Elizabeth.
The work will be carried out at a cost of $32 million, with the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) providing $27 million, and the remaining $5 million coming from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
Addressing a brief ceremony held at the Hopewell Primary School, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Member of Parliament for South West St. Elizabeth, Hon. Dr. Christopher Tufton, said that the project will improve the livelihood of residents.
"We have to help communities to have infrastructure such as roads, because they need to move in and out in order to access the amenities that are available, and to take advantage of the resources that are around them. Farmers can have better access to farm lands and markets that are outside the communities to earn a living for themselves," he pointed out.
President of the Greenfield Production and Marketing Organisation (PMO), Winsome Blair, said that the community was elated that the roadway was finally going to be fixed.
As part of the project, pipes will be laid to improve water supply to several communities in the area, while residents will benefit from disaster management and mitigation training.
At Dr. Tufton's request, the contractor will be using his equipment to clear land next the school for a community playfield.
