Government pushes to increase onion production

Despite the challenges in the agricultural sector, there is still a ray of hope for Jamaican farmers.
This, as the ministry steps up its initiative to increase onion production to satisfy local demand of approximately 12,000 tonnes annually, and cut the US$4 million spent yearly to import the crop, to US$2 million, by 2013.
"Last year, we produced 721 tonnes, that is approximately six to seven per cent of overall production that we were able to produce locally.
Cane farmer probe - AG asked to audit private group

The agriculture minister Christopher Tufton has requested a full audit of the finances of All-Island Jamaica Cane Farmers Association (AIJCFA) in face of a recent consultants' report that authoritative sources say indicate that organisation may be close to bankruptcy and incapable of fulfilling its mandate in a reorganised sugar industry.
The AIJCFA is estimated to have debts of approximately J$112 million, with insufficient inflow of cash to meet its obligations.
Ministry of Agriculture Welcomes EU Sugar Support

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Donovan Stanberry, has welcomed the $1.3 billion in budgetary support being provided by the European Union (EU) for the sugar industry.
The grant was officially handed over to Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Audley Shaw, at Jamaica House Thursday (August 26), as part of a $4 billion disbursement, the major portion of which will go towards the Debt Reduction and Growth Enhancement Programme.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has commended farmers for showing "tremendous resilience" in helping to increase agricultural production, despite the recent drought and other challenges.
"Last year, agriculture grew by 12.1 per cent, a miraculous achievement and I want to pay tribute to all the farm leaders, the Minister and his team, but most importantly the farmers, for their tremendous performance," he said.
