THE Ministry of Health is urging school administrators to ensure that school grounds are free of mosquito breeding sites.

Health minister Rudyard Spencer, in a release to the media, said the ministry will be working with schools to provide guidance and support for mosquito prevention and control activities.

He said all efforts must be taken to ensure that children returning to school enjoy a healthy environment.

The Child Health and Development Passport, which contains information about the growth and development of a child from birth to 17, was officially implemented today (September 1), during a press briefing, held at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, downtown Kingston.

Medical supplies and equipment valued at US$56,000 were handed over to the Gayle Health Clinic, St. Mary, on Wednesday (August 25).

The items were donated by the Solomonic Philanthropic Lodge, an organization comprising Jamaicans living in Canada. They included; blood pressure monitors, wheel chairs, walking sticks, syringes, suction kits, crutches, isolation gowns and scrubs.

A cardiac ward, which will accommodate more than 200 children annually, is to be developed at the Bustamante Hospital for Children.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed yesterday between the Ministry of Health, Gift of Life Rotary District 7020, and other entities, for the development of the sustained cardiac programme.

Health Minister Rudyard Spencer has ordered an immediate review of security arrangements at hospitals and health centres under the management of the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA).

Responding to last Thursday's robbery at the Bustamante Hospital for Children, Spencer ordered that a plan to ensure the safety of persons at these institutions be submitted to him within a week.

He said that particularly important was that, during fogging exercises, residents open doors and windows so that mosquitoes in the homes can be eliminated.
