THE Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is vowing to be strident in its defence of the policies of free education and free health care.

In a release to the media today the Opposition expressed concern at various comments from Government officials which can be interpreted as threatening these policies.

Rudyard Spencer has instructed the management of the Southeast Regional Health Authority (SERHA) to take immediate steps to put in place recent decisions made to improve security at the Spanish Town Hospital. The Minister was addressing a meeting on Monday, March 11, 2011 at the Ministry’s head office involving the management of SERHA, directors of the Ministry and representatives of the company which is contracted to provide security to the facility.

KINGSTON — Reports have indicated that 668 women were raped and 531 suffered from carnal abuse in Jamaica, in 2010.

MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Finance Minister Audley Shaw says the Government will continue to provide concessions for the importation of expensive health care equipment by the private sector so long as there is a willingness to share the resulting services with public health facilities at reduced cost.

KINGSTON — Jamaica compares favourably with the rest of the world in improved infant mortality, life expectancy and fertility rates.

This was disclosed by Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer, in a message read by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Eva Lewis-Fuller, during the launch of the World Population Report (2011) -‘The World at 7 billion’ - at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital in Kingston, on October 31.

HEALTH Minister Rudyard Spencer has said that Jamaica still has a lot more work to do if it is to achieve its 2015 Millennium Development Goal, which requires a 75 per cent reduction of the country's maternity mortality rate of 83 per 100,000 live births.

THE Ministry of Tourism has launched a media campaign to promote HIV/AIDS awareness within Jamaica's critical tourism sector.

The campaign takes the form of a television feature as well as a number of radio advertisements, posters and other visual aids that will be disseminated to all Jamaica Tourist Board licensed entities and attractions.

Gov't Recruiting 56 More Cuban Health Workers

KINGSTON — Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer, says the Government will be recruiting an additional 56 health care workers from Cuba next month, to boost the capacity of the sector.

“We have a tremendous shortage (of health care workers) worldwide, not just in Jamaica...this is why the Ministry of Health has entered into an arrangement with the Cuban Government,” he said.
