Kingston Wharves to Manage Caribbean Trans-shipment Hub

The new Caribbean Transshipment Hub, which will facilitate the transporting of large motor vehicles throughout the region, was officially launched on Friday (Feb.26) during a ceremony held on board the 'Höegh Caribia' at Kingston Wharves.

This hub, previously sited in San Juan, Puerto Rico has been relocated to Jamaica and terminal operations will now be facilitated and managed by Kingston Wharves Limited.

Mayor of Portmore Wants Toll Operator to Assist With Repairing Roads

Mayor of the Municipality of Portmore, in St. Catherine, Keith Hinds, is calling for the operators of the Portmore leg of Highway 2000 to place five per cent of all monthly gains at the toll into a special fund, which would go towards rehabilitating the roadways in the community.

The Mayor proposes that the fund be called the Portmore Road Development Fund, emphasising that it is high time that the operators of the roadway show their appreciation to the people of Portmore.

Roslyn Road Rehab Brings Relief to Albion Mountain

Residents of Albion Mountain, St. Mary, are breathing a sigh of relief following the $4.5 million rehabilitation of the Roslyn main road in the community.

The road was recently resurfaced through the cooperation of the European Union (EU) and the St. Mary Parish Council. Funding to the tune of approximately $2.7 million was provided by the EU, while the remaining $1.8 million was contributed by the Parish Council.

The Patricia Sinclair McCalla-led team appointed to carry out the transformation of the public sector has completed a first draft of the proposed changes, but it is still unable to say how many civil servants will lose their jobs.

However, the unit yesterday made it clear that there will be a reduction in the number of public- sector employees when the transformation is completed over the next 12 to 18 months.

Spanish Town's Emancipation Square to be Smokefree

A ban on cigarette smoking will shortly be introduced within the entire designated area of Emancipation Square in Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

The Square will be the first Smokefree Square in the Caribbean, when a declaration is officially unveiled in March. The initiative is a joint project of the Smoke Free Action Coalition in Spanish Town and the St. Catherine Parish Council.
