    Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, has sent a message to President Michelle Bachelet of Chile on the loss of lives and destruction caused by the severe earthquake that hit central Chile early this morning.
    The death toll, not yet known, is reported to have already exceeded 150. The damage to buildings and infrastructure is extensive.

    The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honourable Olivia Grange, MP has congratulated the "outstanding" Jamaica aquatics team that participated in the 2nd Special Olympics Latin America now on in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

    The 4x25m relay team of Andrew Bartholomew, Nicholas McBean, Crystal Knight and Racquel Lovindeer won the gold medal in their event.

    Andrew Bartholomew also won the gold medal in the 25m freestyle.

    Embattled head of the Child Development Agency (CDA), Alison Anderson-McLean, has quit, ending a six-year tenure marked by stinging criticisms of her performance.

    Health Minister Rudyard Spencer confirmed last night that Anderson-McLean submitted her resignation three weeks ago, but said he could not discuss her reasons for throwing in the towel.

    FINANCE Minister Audley Shaw vowed yesterday that the Commission of Enquiry into the 1990s financial sector meltdown will be completed despite the setback by a court injunction.

    Speaking at the Area Council One meeting of the Jamaica Labour Party in Papine, St Andrew, Shaw said while he was mindful of the injunction stopping the enquiry which was granted by the Supreme Court on February 12, once the matter was out of the courts it would be revived.

    Such was Rex Nettleford's reach across the region and the rest of the world that Gordon House opened up its corridors yesterday to embrace others from the wider Caribbean community - a historic rarity.

    As the visitors, some of whom graced the chamber not so long ago, sat in a special area designated for them, Speaker of the House Delroy Chuck acknowledged the presence of "some very distinguished guests".

    The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture will be hosting a traditional nine night at the Ranny Williams Centre tomorrow (February 11), in honour of the late Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Professor Rex Nettleford.

    Principal Director of Culture in the Ministry, Sydney Bartley, told JIS News that the event, which is free of cost, will begin at 3:30 p.m. with an exhibition depicting the life of Professor Nettleford.

  • Young Garry Buchanan Gets His Last Wish to Meet PM Golding

    18 year old Garry Buchanan had his dying wish come true yesterday afternoon (Feb. 8). His wish was to meet Prime Minister Bruce Golding.

    Garry, the eldest of seven children has been told that he does not have much time left. In fact he was told he only has two weeks to live before he succumbs to cancer which was first diagnosed last year February.
