THE revenue guarantee airlift agreement that Jamaica signed with American Airlines in 2008 has earned the country just over US$150 million and further opened up the destination to increased visitor traffic at a time when other countries in the Caribbean were recording declines, tourism officials confirmed at the weekend.

Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, has said that a strategy is being developed for the economic recovery of earthquake-hit Haiti, which will use elements of Jamaica's Tourism Master Plan.

This strategy, called the Montego Bay Initiative, will position tourism as a main pillar for the economic development of Haiti.

AIR Tran Airways last Thursday began non-stop services from three locations in the United States to Montego Bay, St James.

The three inaugural flights from the Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Orlando International Airport and the Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport, touched down at the Sangster International Airport with a total of 259 passengers.

Minister of Tourism, the Hon Edmund Bartlett, has said that the Government will be spending some $250 million this year on two major spas, Bath, St. Thomas and Milk River, Clarendon, towards the development of Health and Wellness Tourism.

Mr. Bartlett said that this was in keeping with the efforts to expand the 'mental imprint' of Destination Jamaica, worldwide.

AT the recent grand opening of the Berhane Selassie Art Gallery at Tuff Gong International, Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, expressed his deep respect for the record company founded by Robert Nesta Marley.

Before cutting of the ribbon with Marley's daughter, Stephanie, Minister Bartlett, in his speech said he regarded Tuff Gong as "a jewel in the gilded trunk of Jamaica's tourism treasures".

TOURIST arrivals to Jamaica during the winter season are up nine per cent so far, according to tourism officials.

Since the winter season began on December 15, 220,000 stopover tourists have visited Jamaica, with 116,000 visitors arriving within the first three weeks of January alone, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett told the Business Observer on Monday. This, he said, represents close to nine per cent over the similar period last year.

Talks are reportedly at an advanced stage between the Jamaica Redevelopment Foundation Inc and the Jamaican Government for the acquisition of lands near Grange Pen in Lilliput, St James, to construct houses for tourism workers.

"Grange Pen is one of the informal developments within this area that has been under the Operation PRIDE programme for quite a while, and the community itself has been struggling to get itself together," Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett explained yesterday.
