Cabinet Approves Construction of Pump Houses for Yallahs Irrigation System

Cabinet has given approval for a contract valued at just over JM $39 million to Jamaica Drip Irrigation Limited for the supply and installation of irrigation pumps, motors, pump manifolds, control centres and construction of pump houses for the Yallahs Irrigation System, Phase 1 in St. Thomas.

Three Catchment Systems in St. Elizabeth to Be Upgraded

KINGSTON — Approval has been granted by the National Irrigation Commission (NIC) Board of Directors for the expenditure of $1.5 million, to upgrade three abandoned community catchment systems in the parish of St. Elizabeth.

The systems are located in Southfield, Lititz and White Hill, all known for their agricultural production.

Major Portmore water project to begin in two weeks

WORK on the Portmore water project, which will bring improved water supply to residents of the St Catherine municipality and adjoining areas, is slated to get underway in another two weeks.

The project, which be undertaken by the National Water Commission (NWC) over a 15-month period, will involve construction of a new transmission main at the downstream of the Caymanas tank of the Rio Cobre system, connected to the existing Marley Hill Reservoir at Braeton, and reinforcement mains in Portmore.

Water minister meets with Portmore residents

Water Minister Dr. Horace Chang has urged residents of Portmore, to be vigilant in ensuring they get value for money from improvement works to water supply and sewerage services being undertaken by the National Water Commission.

Chang made the call this week while speaking at a public meeting.

Chang disclosed that the works, which are scheduled for completion by March 2013, are expected to facilitate the increase in the existing supplies to Portmore by three million gallons per day.

Richmond and Cane Heap in St. Mary Get Water

KINGSTON — The lives of over 1,200 residents in the communities of Richmond and Cane Heap, St. Mary, are expected to be significantly enhanced with the resuscitation of the Serjue Spring water supply system, which serves both areas.

The system, which was commissioned into service during a ceremony at the Richmond Road United Church on August 24, was upgraded at a cost of just over $1.1 million.

Tiber river to get urgent training

THE Tiber river in St Mary, which ate up a section of a block factory yard and swallowed a tractor Monday night, is to receive urgent river training attention.

Robert Montague, Member of Parliament for west St Mary, told The Gleaner Wednesday that the matter is "being treated as an emergency".

Montague said the National Works Agency (NWA) had conducted an assessment of the area earlier this year and had pre-selected a contractor to undertake the works.

Member of Parliament for North East St. Catherine, Gregory Mair is appealing to transport and works minister Mike Henry to address what he says are major environmental challenges caused by the Mount Rosser highway project.

Mair said the road work has caused the entire Mulloch community to become unstable.

GOVERNMENT spends an average of $14 billion per year repairing damage caused by hurricanes and floods, according to head of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) Ronald Jackson.

Speaking Sunday evening at a community forum in Portmore, St Catherine, Jackson said the spend and its frequency were evidence of poor standards and warned that if continued, attaining developed country status would be elusive.
