GOVERNMENT REFUTES GLEANER’S CLAIM THAT MANATT, PHELPS & PHILLIPS WAS ENGAGED ON BEHALF OF THE JAMAICAN GOVERNMENT
The Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Information, the Hon. Daryl Vaz today said that the story carried on Sunday in the Gleaner concerning the Manatt, Phelps and Phillips (MPP) issue has not revealed anything of substance that has not been publicly stated previously by the Prime Minister.
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) concerned about the spike in crime since the ending of the State of Emergency
The JLP is gravely concerned about the spike in murders since the lifting of the State of Emergency . Murders per day were trending downwards to 2 under the State of Emergency . Since the PNP last Tuesday withheld their vote for an extension and effectively ended the State of Emergency , murders are now trending upwards to 5 per day.
The JLP would like to make our position clear on certain matters relating to the State of Emergency .

The Party did not in any way advance to Harold Brady & Co any funds or facilitated Harold Brady & Co in making this recently disclosed payment of US $15,000.00
JLP Condemns the PNP boycott of the Caricom Heads of Government Meeting as unpatriotic, disloyal and a betrayal of the national interest
The Jamaica Labour Party views as unpatriotic and an act of national betrayal, the declared boycott of the opening ceremony of the 31st Caricom Heads of Government meeting by the PNP. It is clear that narrow partisan political considerations have usurped the national interest of Jamaica in the thinking of the PNP. The deliberate boycott of the constitutional Opposition is also an insult to our most important regional institutions and our Caricom friends.

The PNP it is understood arrived at Parliament today although they were previously informed that Parliament will reconvene on January 19. We consider it frivolous for the Opposition to show up at Gordon House claiming that they were ready for Parliament and the Government was not.
