KINGSTON — Minister of Housing, Environment, Water and Local Government, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, says Jamaica has made substantial improvements in environmental management, but many challenges still remain, which must be addressed, particularly as the country strives to achieve continued economic growth.

PRIME Minister Andrew Holness yesterday officially opened the newly reconstructed Dry River Bridge, situated at Harbour View, St Andrew.

The four-lane bridge was constructed by Kier Construction Limited at a cost of approximately US$9 million with funding under the Government of Jamaica/Inter-American Development Bank Transportation Infrastructure Rehabilitation Programme. It replaces the previous structure, which was destroyed during the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav in 2008.

Amid charges that he facilitated a breach of a Cabinet order which placed a ban on scrap metal, former Commissioner of Customs Danville Walker is contending that he should be commended, not criticised, for earning much-needed foreign exchange for the country.

The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) has indicated that it would be turning over to the Office of the Contractor General information regarding the alleged breaches.

KINGSTON — The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, has halted all exports of scrap metal from Jamaica, until the issue of breaches of an earlier suspension are cleared up.

Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Dr. Christopher Tufton, said that the decisionfollows the breach of a Cabinet Order stipulating that companies eligible to export scrap metal must receive a permit from the Trade Board.

KINGSTON — Minister of Education, Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government will be "looking very seriously" at developing an electronic waste (e-waste) policy and creating an industry dealing with the management and recycling of this refuse.

MINISTER of Water, Environment and Housing Horace Chang, who is now on a tour in section of the Riverton Landfill, in St Catherine says he is pleased with the progress being made by a compost project established there.

"The purpose of the tour is to get a first hand view on the operations taking place at the site and we are pleased to see what is happening," Chang.

He will also open a computer lab at the land fill office which will serve members of the Riverton City community.

KINGSTON — The Government has stepped up its effort to boost its renewable energy strategy, through the commissioning of a Wind Mapping study.

This study is being undertaken by Wigton Wind Farm Limited, an agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mining, through the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ).

Wind mapping will determine the wind blowing patterns across the island. It will also identify the best points for establishing wind farms.

The Government is putting its weight behind industry, investment and commerce minister Dr Christopher Tufton, who is facing a backlash in the wake of the decision to indefinitely close the scrap metal industry.

One of the most strident critics of the decision has been Karl Samuda, who held the portfolio for more than three years until he was replaced by Tufton just a month ago.

KINGSTON — Steps are being taken to clean up the site of last week's reported chemical contamination at the former Ausjam gold mine in Pennants, Clarendon.

According to Minister Housing, Environment and Water, Dr. Horace Chang, the effort has included the relocation of over seven tonnes of sodium cyanide, which was being stored in a container at the mine, formerly operated by the Australian firm, Ausjam Mining Limited, which was identified as the source of the leak.
