The Jamaica Laour Party (JLP) has rejected several claims by the Opposition about the State of Emergency.

The Opposition spokesman on national security, Peter Bunting has claimed that the State of Emergency did not cause the reduction in crimes, but instead cordon, curfews and searches.

However, the JLP says this is not true.

It has also rejected arguments by the Opposition that the Government did not want the State of Emergency to be extended.

Jamaica is looking to identify new consumer markets in China, United States, Canada, Europe, and South Korea, as it seeks to stimulate demand for its coffee, which is rated among the world's finest.

The move comes as the world recession has reduced demand in the traditional Japanese market by about 50 per cent, leaving dealers with an excess of stock. Japan, over the last 20 years, has bought 85 per cent of Jamaican Blue Mountain and High Mountain Coffee.

"We are creating lean and efficient public sector entities and so it (public sector rationalisation plan) is a precursor to certain changes that are going to be taking place," she said.

Monday, July 26, 2010

Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Dr. Christopher Tufton, launched the anticipated fish wire project, which imposes a new minimum size for the mesh wire used in fish pots, on Friday (July 23).

The new minimum size of one and a half inch mesh wire, replaces the one and a quarter inch mesh wire being used in the construction of fish pots. The move increases the minimum size of the fishes which can be caught and keeps out immature fishes, contributing to the sustainability of the island's fish resources.

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) concerned about the spike in crime since the ending of the State of Emergency

The JLP is gravely concerned about the spike in murders since the lifting of the State of Emergency . Murders per day were trending downwards to 2 under the State of Emergency . Since the PNP last Tuesday withheld their vote for an extension and effectively ended the State of Emergency , murders are now trending upwards to 5 per day.

The JLP would like to make our position clear on certain matters relating to the State of Emergency .

False Argument #1. State of Emergency is not responsible for reduction in crime

Prime Minister of Jamaica, Hon. Bruce Golding

Since the declaration of a State of Emergency in the Corporate Area on May 23rd which was later extended to St. Catherine, the Police and the Military have been conducting an intensive campaign to reduce the level of crime and violence that have plagued the country for many years. The results have been positive and encouraging. For the first time that most of us can recall, the criminal elements have been shaken and they are on the run.
