More than 600 people are to get direct employment while hundreds more will benefit indirectly as the Windalco bauxite plant resumes full operation in Ewarton, St Catherine.

Approximately 500 people are already working at the plant which had its official reopening yesterday.

More than 95 per cent of that number were employees who had been sent home when Windalco closed its doors over a year ago.

Jamaica Gleaner

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles, is urging the nation to not get weary about his administration's promise of jobs, jobs and more jobs.

In opening the 2009-2010 Sectoral Debate inside Gordon House yesterday, Charles said the promise was not an illusion and argued that there was little the Government could do in the turbulent economic conditions to deliver on its platform vow.

Jamaica Gleaner

Pearnel Charles, minister of labour and social security, said last Friday that the nearly two dozen Jamaican mechanics who have been enlisted in Canada's overseas employment programme were evidence of the Government's promise to create more jobs.

"When we (the Jamaica Labour Party) said to the Jamaican people we're going to help you find jobs, it was understood that we couldn't find jobs in Jamaica for everybody overnight.
