KINGSTON (JIS):Sunday, December 07, 2008The first set of 23 heavy duty mechanics, who were selected in October 2008, by a team from the Coast Mountain Bus Company in Vancouver, Canada, under the Okanagan College (Operation 120) Programme, departed the island on December 5. The company, which has a fleet of 1,200 buses, forged a partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security earlier this year, as they sought to hire a number of workers from Jamaica in this category. At the departure ceremony, Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles, urged the workers to use the opportunity to improve Jamaica's image internationally, irrespective of the fact that it would not be an easy road.

150 Extension Officers to be Added Over the Next 18 Months

KINGSTON (JIS):
Sunday, November 30, 2008

The number of extension officers at the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), will be increased by 400 per cent over the next 18 months, with about 150 officers to be added.

Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Christopher Tufton, speaking at a recent JIS 'Think Tank', said that the move is in keeping with the Ministry's restructuring plans. It will also make good on the Government's promise to provide the necessary technical support for farmers, so as to improve productivity levels.

"Over the next two years, the Government will be restructuring the Ministry and one of the first things that we will improve on is increasing RADA's extension services. What this means is that the extension capacity will expand over the next one and a half years by 400 per cent," Dr. Tufton stated.

KINGSTON (JIS):
Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles, has called on employers and trade unions to work in unison, in order to improve Jamaica's productivity level.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day Productivity Conference, hosted by the Jamaica Productivity Centre (JPC), today (October 28), at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston, the Minister emphasised that the Government is committed to ensuring that the country's productivity level increases.

"This conference is very important and I am calling on the management of capital and the management of labour to work together. It is important that peace reigns, and that respect is given to a man who invests his life and family in labour. If we get that kind of co-operation, productivity will improve," he asserted.

Illiteracy marginalising workforce - Charles

published: Wednesday | October 29, 2008

Illiteracy and a training deficit are the greatest setbacks to the Jamaican workforce in the 21st century, said Labour and Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles.

Charles was speaking as the Government embarks on a partnership with Okanagan College in British Columbia for a large-scale recruitment drive to employ 1,200 skilled Jamaican workers for the overseas market.

The project, Operation 120, would provide the Canadian province with a labour pool to alleviate the shortage of qualified and experienced personnel.

"My great problem is that many Jamaican workers are not (literate), and so we have a great task in removing this barrier of illiteracy and upgrading them to the standard required in Canada," Charles said.

Jamaica's adult literacy rate currently stands at 79.9 per cent, according to statistics obtained from a UNESCO Education For All (EFA) 2008 monitoring report.
