Motor Vehicle Inspection to be Improved

OCHO RIOS(JIS):
Sunday, December 14, 2008

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Works Agency (NWA), Milton Hodelin, has said that the Ministry of Transport and Works is forging a joint venture arrangement between the Island Traffic Authority and the Road Maintenance Fund, to facilitate improved delivery of the motor vehicle inspection services.

"Importantly, this involves the procurement of modern equipment for the testing of motor vehicles, a most critical plank of the overall reform process. Integral to this whole development is the automation of the motor vehicle inspection services, to include automated diagnostic testing in the inspection of motor vehicles," Mr. Hodelin said.

He pointed out that this is being done to ramp up the efficiency and accuracy of the fitness testing process, to allow for a much safer environment on the nation's roadways.

Heavy Duty Mechanics Off to Canada

KINGSTON (JIS):Sunday, December 07, 2008The first set of 23 heavy duty mechanics, who were selected in October 2008, by a team from the Coast Mountain Bus Company in Vancouver, Canada, under the Okanagan College (Operation 120) Programme, departed the island on December 5. The company, which has a fleet of 1,200 buses, forged a partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security earlier this year, as they sought to hire a number of workers from Jamaica in this category. At the departure ceremony, Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles, urged the workers to use the opportunity to improve Jamaica's image internationally, irrespective of the fact that it would not be an easy road.

Caribbean Ministers Approve Final Draft of Regional Local Gov't Policy

MONTEGO BAY (JIS):
Thursday, December 04, 2008

Caribbean Local Government Ministers have approved the final draft of the Regional Policy and Co-operation Framework on Local Governance, which will serve as a guide towards enhancing Local Government in the region.

The sanctioning of the policy came after two days of meetings in Montego Bay, St. James from December 1 to 2.

The policy, which will serve as a reference tool for countries that are developing, reforming, introducing or reintroducing Local Government, will be submitted to the CARICOM Heads of Government for consideration at their next summit.

The Prime Minister, in a statement read by Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, Robert Montague, at the opening ceremony of the 2nd Regional Consultation at the Rose Hall Resort and Country Club on December 1, lauded the move to adopt the policy, which he said, will help to transform Caribbean societies.

Members of the House Debate Bill to Amend Jury Act

KINGSTON (JIS):
Thursday, December 04, 2008

Debate on a Bill to amend the Jury Act, so as to enable the Registrar of the Supreme Court to make appropriate arrangements for the serving of summonses on jurors, and to remove from the Commissioner of Police, the responsibility for the serving of such summonses, began on December 2 in the House of Representatives.

"This is important, as given the significant problems we have now in fighting crime, we consider that it is an inefficient use of trained policemen to have them travelling the highways and byways to serve summonses on jurors," Prime Minister Bruce Golding said, as he piloted the Bill.

Mr. Golding also informed that the Bill is being amended, so as to allow for summonses to be served by Police Constables, if necessary, as "there may be some circumstances in which it is necessary to employ the services of a policeman."
