SAMUDA SAYS DAVIES PLAYING ONE UPMANSHIP

February 22, 2008

General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, the Honourable Karl Samuda, has expressed serious concerns about Opposition Spokesman on Finance, Dr. Omar Davies’ comments on rising food prices. Mr. Samuda said the $500 million subsidy implemented by the government to suppress increases in basic food items namely counter and baking flour, bulk rice, cooking oil and milk powder.

Rising food prices has been as a result of a confluence of international factors including volatility in the oil and commodities markets.

Mr. Samuda said that the prices of the basic commodities have stabilized and in some instances seen decreases.

Dr. Davies’ comments Mr. Samuda said, bewildered him in light of the Peoples National Party’s expressed agreement with the $500 million subsidy at the recent Vale Royale talks.

Mr. Samuda is demanding a clear and unequivocal statement from the PNP as to where they stand on the matter, considering there earlier agreement with the government’s approach to tackling the problem.

BEENIE MAN’S CLAIM DISMISSED

October 30, 2007

The Jamaica Labour Party has dismissed as misguided, mischievous and absurd the claim by Mr. Moses Davis, popularly known as Beenie Man, that the tax case against him now before the court is a consequence of his being targeted by the new government because of his support for the PNP.

In a statement today the JLP said that the tax assessment levied on Mr. Davis and the action to recover through the courts was initiated long before the present government took office after the September 3rd elections. Indeed, his former manager and PNP candidate, Mr. Patrick Roberts, recently stated that it was not the first time that the government had attempted to collect the multi-million dollar tax claim and that his company had challenged the tax assessment in the past.
