Shahine Robinson and Mike Henry Ask for Clarification
Opposition Spokespersons for Tourism and Transport, Shahine Robinson and Mike Henry are today calling on Transport and Works Minister, Dr. Omar Davis to clarify reports that the public sector run Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) plans to get involved in the tour and travel market.
Mrs. Robinson noted that several private bus operators are already concerned about the plan announced regarding the taxpayer subsidized bus company. She noted, “Many of them are worried as they have worked very hard to build their businesses to take care of themselves and their families. Several find it hard to make ends meet already; so for a taxpayer subsidized bus company to be saying that they plan to enter the market can easily be construed as unfair. That's why we need clarity”
Meanwhile Transport Spokesperson, Mr. Henry noted that, “I must call on the Minister to intervene and advise the Chairman of the Transport Authority to weigh very carefully the approval or granting of any extension of the role of the JUTC outside of its licensed mandate to operate in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR) and more so where it impacts on the totality of the transport sector of which it is the regulatory arm.”
Mr. Henry went on to state that, “Dr. Davis needs to update the nation on these announced plans of the JUTC and also update us on the strategic direction of the JUTC. As it stands now, it appears to be a rudderless vessel that is now on a collision course with some big but also many small boats. I don’t get a sense that the government is really serious about building out the multi-modal approach that we left. There just doesn't seem to be any proper focus.”
